Today’s a bit chilly…

09:40
To avoid having to recompile the customized version of Ref/Dif I’ve got, I set up a virtual machine with a clean XP installation. Instead of doing so with VMware, with which I’ve been working, Bruno got me into trying VirtualBox. In terms of performance, it completely smokes VMware.

Day (…) 280 – Dia do Bolseiro
Thursday May 10th 2007 ..

Things have rolling OK since I last posted, a month ago. For the moment, all the documents from a bibliographic references repository have been successfully imported to DSpace (thanks to my ninja Perl script, which I’m really proud of), and a few other people have been using DSpace with more or less ease – being that “less ease” implies me earing “Something’s not working, because I … blah blah blah blah … and nothing appeared!” from the other end of the line. No matter what, it’s never simple enough for people. “Yes, you DO have to press the [Next] button!!”.

Anyway; me and pretty much all the ‘bolseiros de investigação’ from LNEC are going to present their work today to the “community”, by way of a poster. Mine was just posted, and this afternoon I’ll be standing by next to it waiting for people to come by and ask me about it.
This means that I had to stop doing what I was doing to build the poster and write an essay. Like someone would say: “Oh man… what a drag…” ;)

18:00
Well, it just finished. Didn’t “sell” much, I must confess… Anyway, I did see a couple of interesting presentations about the use of mathematical models for simulation, used here. When I say interesting, I do so because of my recent involvement with Ref/Dif (a model for sea wave propagation simulation), with which I’ll be starting my research on the optimization of aquatic structures (for the moment) with GAs. I’m not going into detail here, as I don’t have the whole picture myself, but maybe soon.

Found out about “ssh -Y”… My world is now different!

Ever since the SysFuCup I’ve decided to virtualize all my projects. If I SysFuKitUp again all I have to do I run the vm’s wherever and I’m good to go again.

Long time no see, once again!
Been kind of busy lately… well, real busy, to be fair.

My MsC is breaking me… Difficulties after difficulties, and the worse is that sometimes is just my tiredness complicating things over.
Here at work there are other things that are starting which are a lot more interesting than the DSpace subject, and the other “TODOs”… which are todos nonetheless!

Day (blah blah blah) 230
Thursday February 22nd 2007 ..

08:08
Today is going to be a PERL day! Got a script to put together, and I hope to get it all done today.

Yesterday was a JSP day… I finished the new community/collection navigation system for DSpace, which was static and flat out on the page. It used too much space so I suggested that something like JS script should be used so that one could collapse or expand the communities to hide or reveal their children. I used a modified version of this taglib. The changes involved creating an extra class, a few extra tags, and rearrange of the html and JS output process so that everything could fit in nicely. In the end, it all did…

14:02
LAC just stopped by. He wanted me to schedule some of my time to the building of a GA that could simulate marinas. Looks interesting!!

14:50
Looks like marinas are built avoiding symmetry due to inner wave propagation.
This means I’ll have to be able to calculate this wave propagation! Hum… this reminds of SCAD! :)

Day 218
Monday February 05th 2007 ..

08:00
It’s misty today… and cold. I turned off the heater for the weekend in the office, so its cold in here too.
I’ll be taking care of some loose ends today.

10:58
It took me about 15 minutes of stapling and hole punching to organize my chaotic desk.

13:18
Back from lunch. It’s not that cold anymore. In fact, it’s not cold at all. I could use a bench outside, under a tree and a wireless connection…

After a lunch of delicious green eggs, the usual coffee, a bit of chat and the awesome day outside, the will to get back to work is pretty much gone…

The heater stayed on all night at the office… Felt good stepping in!

18:00
3,5 hours sitting on a wooden chair – a very uncomfortable one. Just finished a meeting on a “Gestão de Exepdiente” app with the guy who coded it… Everyone here was clueless about why some things didn’t work, but I guess now there’s a good starting point.

The first work post of 2007… No big news though…
DSpace’s report is still on hold (waiting from I don’t know what from I don’t know who).
Commence’s report is on the line.
I have to test a few (5 to 10) workflow engines and make an overview about which should be chosen for LNEC, although I’m not the decision maker on the subject. This can be helpfull for my MSc…
I’ve been allocated to yet another project – yeah, keep’em coming – where I’m supposed to solve a few problems that are keeping an app from working the way it should!
The GA are pretty much under all this other stuff.

On my MSc, I’ve been breaking stones in Dojo, trying to put the UI together… but the lack of APIs is killing me.
Also, my XATA2007 paper has been accepted, which means yours truly will be speaking in a conference… in front of people… yeah, I have a problem with that!
